Different Kinds Of Furniture Stores

by Adriana Noton

Two brothers had very little money, a mule and a cart. One day they bought a bed on an auction sale with the few notes that they had. Within a few hours they sold the bed at a profit and delivered for free on their mule cart. That was the beginning of the business which grew into a huge chain of furniture stores and was listed on the stock exchange. The receipt for their first sale was framed and displayed in the company boardroom.

As time went by, the network of stores spread across the country. Whenever one entered a remote village or dusty town a large sign would indicate the existence of a branch store serving the community. The success of the chain was attributed to two key factors. The first was a large file that had a complete set of instructions that had to be followed to the letter. The rules took account of almost every eventuality that might face a store manager in the course of his duties.

Credit was the second factor. Cheap furniture and electrical appliances were sold at inflated prices although on a small deposit was required. The rest could be paid over a number of years with interest added. The clients were mainly simple people attracted by the prospect of having a flashy piece of new furniture in their small abode. Although they could not pay in full the monthly installments could be kept up for a long period and in the end they would have paid two or three times what the furniture was worth.

The stores were actually outlets for banking activities. Most profits came from interest charged on hire purchase agreements. The chain of stores was actually sold to a bank which managed to turn a profitable business into a loss making venture. This was because the public got wise to the fact that it is better to buy for cash at about the same time that the bank bought the chain.

Handcrafted solid wooden pieces with dovetailed joints are good investments. Discerning people buy such pieces knowing that they will not fall apart and become tatty, but appreciate as the years pass. Eventually they may be passed on to the next generation as heirlooms.

Some pieces have already been passed on from one generation to another and attained the status of antiques. Their beauty and worth continues and as years pass the accretion of beauty and admiration grow. So furniture pieces are unlike human beings in this, that the older they get the more beautiful they are.

Furniture stores need to cater to particular clientele. Beds with large headboards bedecked with hearts and frills in shiny fabrics will not please some and be the acme of good taste to others. Those who prefer clean lines and solid oak will probably have to look elsewhere.

Online websites are the twenty-first century furniture stores. Even established stores with expensive show rooms have departments that cater to the needs of new shoppers. They can browse through details and images on their computers before ordering online and paying by credit card or an online paying service. Delivery services bring the items to the door. The store owner saves on showroom space and clients benefit from being able to shop from an armchair.
