Alcohol and drug prevention programs for adolescents are designed not only to limit the population of addicts going to drug rehabilitation programs but most of all to lessen the incidents of addiction in the society. The goal of the prevention plan is to educate the public on how teens are led to drug addiction as well as to prevent this occurrence. Below are some of the drug abuse prevention programs that have been effective in helping teens fight drug addiction.

Project towards No Drug Abuse

Project towards No Drug Abuse (Project TND) is made for high school seniors with or without risk for addiction. This program is especially targeting students who have failing marks and have used addictive substances. According to the program developer of TND, Steve Sussman, the project concentrates on the behaviours, expectations, beliefs and desires of students to drug addiction. This program rebuilds relationships, temperance and developing social skills. It also encourages healthy living through a 50-minute classroom sessions. Lectures and role playing are focused on the advantages of open-mindedness, listening and effective communications. This particular program is effective for all teenagers belonging to any ethnic groups.

Guiding Good Choices

Guiding Good Choices focus on educating parents on how to reduce their children's risk of developing alcohol and drug abuse. It is developed by Channing Bete Company that focuses on drug prevention, smoking cessation and success of youth in school. Family management and communication skills are taught to the parents. They are asked to determine the factors that contribute to the addiction process of their children. According to a study published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, this program has reduced the occurrence of alcoholism by forty percent to teenagers. It has also reduced the incidence of depressive disorders to teenagers. The National Dropout Prevention Center and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Center identified it as a Model Program and named it as the Exemplary 1 Program.

Project Alert

Project Alert is developed by Rand Corporation that aims to help kids recognize that not everyone is a drug addict. They encourage teens to learn new skills to combat negative behaviours. It is designed for both high-risk and low-risk students in all socioeconomic population. There is 38 percent of decrease in the use of cigarettes and alcohol consumption in a 10-year period field test.

These programs would help promote anti-drug attitude to the youth. If adolescents will give their full cooperation to these programs they will be saved from drug treatment programs.
