The Risks Of Smokeless Tobacco

by Mark Mutschler

Many people didn’t know tobacco can still cause disease even if it’s not being smoked.

Common smokeless tobacco forms called spit, chew or snuff are often thought of as safe smoking alternatives. However, they are dangerous too! Studies show smokeless tobacco is often more addictive than smoking cigarettes. Teens usually are shocked to realize one tin of smokeless tobacco can give off just as much nicotine as three packs of cigarettes. In fact, smokeless tobacco can also cause gum disease and pre-cancerous lesions (leukoplakia) in only three or four months.

Early signs of oral cancer in smokeless tobacco users include:

•Mouth sores which don’t heal quickly.

•White or red patches on the lips or tongue.

•Mouth, lip or tongue pain or numbness.

•Changes in chewing, swallowing, speaking, moving the jaw or teeth.

Many people choose to ignore these early signs of oral cancer because they aren’t painful. But, if the oral cancer isn’t detected soon enough, it can lead to extensive disfiguring face surgery and even death.

Remember, to stay healthy it’s important to avoid tobacco in all forms. By avoiding tobacco you will be avoiding many cancer-causing chemicals!
