Sunglasses can increase perceptible in direct sunlight, eliminate blinding light and shield against visible or UV light. These specs may be used for aesthetic purposes as well. Some individuals wear sunglasses to hide their eyes. This is common for blind people. These lenses come in many shapes, sizes and colors. Prescription lenses can be added to the spectacles as well.

Three-dimensional glasses are typically used for entertainment purposes. These devices can give the false belief of three dimensions. Usually this only works on images that have been specially produced for 3D viewing. These specs can be worn to view 3D films. Classic 3D glasses had one red and one cyan lens. If the 3D lenses are polarized, they can make colors appear three-dimensional. It is suggested that these spectacles are only worn when viewing 3D material.

Individuals struggling to see when items are close may use reading spectacles. As their name suggests, these spectacles are usually worn while reading up-close text. They contain magnifying lenses. The magnification levels cover a large spectrum; therefore most reading specs do not require a prescription. They can be purchased at almost any store. Full frames and half-eyes are the two types of reading glasses. Full frames are usually the size of traditional lenses. Half-eyes have lenses that are half the size of traditional lenses. Reading spectacles have been proven to treat some instances of hyperopia and presbyopia.

Bifocals contain two focal areas in one lens. Trifocals contain three focal areas in one lens. Each focal area runs horizontally across the lens. Individuals who have trouble focusing at more than one distance use multifocal lenses in their eyeglasses. Progressive lenses, also known as no-line bifocals, create a smooth transition between the two or three focal areas.

Contact lenses are placed on top of the eye. They have corrective, therapeutic or cosmetic functions. Corrective contacts work in the same way that prescription eyeglasses do, but for some individuals, are considered more convenient. These clear lenses eliminate the need for eyeglasses and because of their appearance and placement, are usually unnoticeable.
