Dealing With Disabilities Positively

by William Gabriel

Just because you were born with a certain type of disability doesn't mean you can no longer have an enjoyable and fulfilled life. According to the Medline Plus, one out of five Americans has a disability. But what's inspiring is the large percent of disabled people who don't let their disability hinder them from making the most out of their lives. Whether it's a hearing or vision impairment, immobility, or something else, there are so many ways by which you can learn to cope with it positively. Here are some practical pieces of advice on how to do just that.

Accept your disability

Many disabled people spend their whole lives wishing they did not have this condition, wallowing about all the things they could do if they were born "normal." But this is only a waste of time. You can use this time to appreciate the small things that you can do. You can use your disability to inspire yourself to overcome it and become even better than those people who weren't born with what you have. Remember, constantly obsessing about your condition won't fix anything, it would only make matters worse. Stop self-pitying and help yourself become the great person you're destined to be.

Get support from family and friends

There are lots of people who love you, care for you, and support you. That's one huge blessing that you really should be thankful for. Being around these people not only makes you feel good about yourself, they also inspire you to accomplish things you never thought you're capable of doing.

Stay away from people who have negative perceptions about your disability or who put you down just because you're "different" from them. It's actually they who have the problem and not you because their narrow minds are not capable of understanding the challenges that people like you go through everyday.

Join support groups

It would also be a good idea to join a support group. Hearing other people's struggles will make it easier for you to cope with your own. A good place to learn more about your condition as well as get support from people who experience the same challenges that you do is the disability network. This is not an ordinary disability support group. This one takes encouragement to a higher level through its programs like the disability network awards, which seek to recognize the achievements of disabled people in different fields.

Take care of yourself

It's very important that you take care of yourself. Disabilities can bring discomfort and pain, and being in top shape alleviates that. Make it a habit to eat healthy. Stay away from high cholesterol, fats, sugar and sodium. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grain food items. Be physically active. Do away with stress as much as possible. Consult your doctor about the suitable fitness and diet program that you can take on.
