Using Feng Shui

by Amber Singleton

An ancient Chinese discipline, Feng Shui literally means “air” and “water.” It is a technique that is used for humans and the human-made world to achieve a proper balance or harmony with the environment.
Originally, it was used in agriculture and internal furniture designs throughout Asia, mostly in China.
It is now more commonly used in the Western world as a way for humans to design their rooms and houses in a way that achieves harmony with the natural environment. But interior designers aren’t the only ones concerned with this discipline. Other groups, like landscape ecologists, architecture schools, environmental scientists and geographers are also studying Feng Shui.
Using Feng Shui in the bedroom can be easy. Designing your bedroom where there is harmony between you and the outside world is easy when you have the right kind of furniture and the right kind of living space.
The best kind of furniture for the concept of Feng Shui is modern and contemporary furniture. This style works hand-in-hand with the simplicity of Feng Shui. Feng Shui has a minimalist element to it and so does modern and contemporary style.
Feng Shui can be applied all rooms of a house, but most people begin their Feng Shui work in the bedroom. And the first piece of furniture they begin with, which is basically the centerpiece of the bedroom, is the bed.
Placement of your bed within the bedroom is important. Most of the time, you want your bed in the center of the room so that the energy can flow easily around your bed. Having your bed against a wall is bad because the energy will crash against the wall and therefore will not be able to flow.
It also bad to have your bed, or the headboard of the bed, blocking any windows in your bedroom. This blocks any energy from the outside natural world from coming in. It also blocks the warm rays of the sun from coming in, and this is, too, is very bad for the Feng Shui of the room.
When it comes to your other pieces of furniture in your bedroom, you also do not want them blocking any energy flow or any windows. So the same thing applies to these pieces of furniture. Place them in way that does not block windows and that creates a sort of symmetry in the room. They need to have smooth lines and not be bulky at all.
Lastly, in your bedroom, you don’t want to block your window with thick heavy curtains or blinds that are difficult to open. Light blinds, shades or curtains are a must for a room that needs to have energy flow easily from area to area.
The most important thing to remember when you’re redesigning your room using Feng Shui is have room where items are placed in a way that windows are not and that energy is able to flow.
