What Are the Steps In a Keratin Straightening Treatment

by CL Murphy

Keratin hair straightening treatments are becoming more and more popular amongst women with ethnic hair. Known by many different names, such as, Brazilian keratin treatments, BKT, and Coppola treatments, this is the process of adding keratin to the hair to strengthen and straighten the hair. Keratin is good a product to be used on the hair, because it is naturally found in the nails, skin and hair. When it is applied to the hair, it acts as a sealant for the hair cuticle and protects the hair. Keratin is used to straighten frizzy hair and curly hair also. Keratin hair straightening treatments work to repair damaged hair. It also helps reduce frizz from humidity, because the keratin treatment adds moisture to the hair.

Applying a keratin straightening treatment to the hair is quite simple and does not require a lot of steps. It is recommended that a keratin hair treatment be performed by a professional in a beauty salon, but there are treatments that can be done by you at home. First, your hair must be washed thoroughly and dried. Then you divide the hair into different sections. After this, you apply the keratin treatment to each divided section of hair. The hair is then gone over with a flat iron that will typically be set at four hundred and fifty degrees. This process may be repeated with the flat iron depending on your hair type. This will infuse the keratin into the hair. Doing this does not affect the internal structure of the hair, but it does smoothen out the hair cuticle and the damaged hair is repaired. Your hair will be a lot more manageable after the keratin treatment.

After you have keratin treatment, you are not supposed to wash your hair for, at the very least, seventy-two hours. It is also suggested that you avoid wearing any sort of hair clip, or wearing your hair up or tucked behind your ears. The reason for this is that you are to try to avoid the hair kinking up while the treatment is freshly applied to the hair. Your hair will seem flat and lifeless during these initial seventy-two hours. After you wash your hair the first time, you will see that the hair will become full again and have volume. It will also regain its movement.

Keratin straightening treatments have been known to last for a long time. Of course, over time the keratin treatment will eventually wash out and you hair will return to its natural curl pattern. But it should last anywhere from six weeks up to 3 months, depending on your hair type.

If you are looking to repair damaged hair and straighten hair that is curly, a keratin straightening treatment is just what you need. It may seem a bit costly, ranging from one hundred and fifty dollars to three hundred and fifty dollars, but for the time that it last, it is definitely worth the investment.
