What You Need To Do Before Moving Day
Finding a new home can be a very exciting moment, but preparing to leave the old one isn't. However, a few tips can help simplify the process before the big day comes.
Leave It: Putting things into piles that you just don't really need is a major waste of energy and time. Before getting your packing on, get rid of the junk. Go into each room one by one and commit to getting rid of 20 percent of it at least, whether you plan to sell, donate or trash. Start with the closet; chances are if you haven't worn it all year, you really don't need it.
Clean: After junking the excess, clean the rest of the place; you'll thank yourself on moving day.
Shop: Figure out how many boxes every room will need, considering the best sizes and shapes for things you need to pack; remember, you will want to carry more small and light boxes than you do heavy and giant ones. If you're in the market for a bargain, try stopping by the local stores and getting them to give you the extra boxes they were just going to throw out anyway.
Make a System: By coming up with a schedule and a packing plan, you can probably get an entire room packed in two or three days. If you don't have that kind of time to spare, call your friends over and make it a pizza and moving party. Find a place in your home where you can pile up the boxes and have it be out of the way.
Wrap Delicates: Even if you are just walking across the street to move, you will want to carefully wrap fragile delicates in bubble wrap, newspaper and packing peanuts. If it is something you love that cannot be replaced, consider just carrying it with you rather than having movers handle it.
Label: It is simply easier to unpack things if you label them and provide a number for every box. It also helps in case you lose a box in transit. Keep a list of what contents are in each box and try to keep them together, such as having all kitchen items in one box and your Blu-ray collection in another box.
Take a Break: Moving day is tough, but you will still need to give yourself a break. Having organization keeps things easy, but you will be fine if you end up with a miscellaneous box that houses things you somehow missed.
Hire the Experts: Sometimes, it is worth having an expert mover come in to finish the job. These experts can wrap furniture, safely pack a television and figure out how to transport other large objects you need to bring.
Save a Box: Once you clear out things, you are almost guaranteed to find things you forgot. Keep a box for those items to take when it's time to lock the door and leave.
With these tips, it's easy to know what to do before the big day arrives.
