When you sell your house, your estate agent will make a princely sum for the honour of finding a buyer. But, if you're looking at ideas for generating income with your camera, here's the chance to turn the tables and sell photographs to estate agents.
The brief for this business plan is very simple. When people are trying to sell houses they need photographs that entice people to want to go and look at the property. Basically this particular plan involves asking local estate agents whether or not they require better pictures of the houses they are trying to sell.
There are two basic routes that can be followed. Either you get the estate agents to ask people selling their house if they want to hire a photographer to come in and take pictures of the property, or you arrange a deal whereby the estate agents hire you themselves. Both plans for selling photographs work, although not all of the time.
In my experience roughly half of estate agents already have photographers working for them, but this means that the other half are still trying open to offers, and that means there is an opening for you. Your pitch to the estate agents must include an incentive for them, as they are people primarily concerned with making money. You can either charge customers direct and offer a percentage to the estate agents, or you can tell the estate agents that they can use the photographs to entice people to use them. Thus they agree to pay you to take the pictures.
This is quite an easy plan to set up, but does require some determination on your part, as you can be knocked back a few times before you get a deal.
Any estate agent worth dealing with would expect you to produce a portfolio. Go to an area you are familiar with, that has some fine looking properties. When you see one worth photographing, see if the owner is at home and ask for permission to photograph their property. Explain you are a putting together a portfolio with the aim of selling photographs to a local estate agent. Hand over your business card, so they realise you are professional, and serious about your business. Hopefully they will grant you permission, and you can go about building your portfolio in this way.
