New research has spawned talk of a cure for hepatitis C, the blood born viral infection responsible for being the leading cause of cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver transplants in the United States.

The new research shows that upon use of the drug peginterferon alone or coupled with the drug ribavirin, reduces the level of the virus to undetectable levels for as long as seven years.

The lead researcher Dr. Mitchell Shiffman who is a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and chief of hepatology and the medical director of the school's Liver Transplant Program said, “This paper strongly suggests, for the first time, that hepatitis C is a curable disease. After treatment, 99.6 percent of the patients remained virus undetectable for over five years," he added.”

The study examined 997 people with hepatitis or hepatitis coupled with HIV and were treated with either Pegasys (peginterferon alfa-2a) alone or in tandem with ribavirin. According to HealthDay news, Shiffman's team then monitored blood levels of hepatitis C once a year for an average of 4.1 years, and as long as seven years.

The research concluded that 99 percent of those treated with peginterferon alone or in tandem with ribavirin were cured of the disease and had no detection of the viral infection for up to seven years.

The studies authors said, "This is the first long-term study that confirms what we believed for many years that these individuals are truly cured of hepatitis C."
