Liposuction - For That Extraordinary Appearance

by Wordsworth White

Have you ever wondered how so many celebrities manage to look so outrageously slim? Well, to most of them, traditional methods like diet and exercise regimen must have definitely helped. But a good number of celebrities, though they may not openly admit it, got their envious figures in a plastic surgeon's office by undergoing a procedure called lipo.

What Is Lipo?

Liposuction, also called lipo, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes fat deposits and shapes the body. In this procedure, fat is removed from under the skin with the help of a vacuum-suction hollow pin-like instrument or by using an ultrasonic probe.

Who Performs This Procedure?

Liposuction is carried out by licensed plastic surgeons and dermatologists. Persons desirous of undergoing this procedure can get it done either in a doctor's office or in a hospital or a surgical center. Lipo presents many surgical challenges to doctors. Among them are the following:

* Removing the right amount of fat

* Maintaining a proper fluid balance of the patient

* Keeping the neighboring blood vessels and tissues intact

* Making the patient feel comfortable.

What Are The Limitations?

Not everybody may be a good candidate for liposuction. Good overall health and sound physical status is essential. Lipo results are not always perfect. Most surgeons counsel patients not to have disproportionate expectations from this procedure.

Moreover, normal ageing process limits the firmness and elasticity of the skin, so older patients may not achieve the best results.

FDA has advised patients to accept the possibilities of complications, both minor and serious, post-liposuction surgery. Many patients after surgery experience numbness, scarring, discoloration, sagging skin, and lumpiness requiring follow-up surgery for corrective action. Hazards also include risks for serious complications. There have been cases of blood clots, infection, excessive fluid loss resulting in pulmonary embolism and shock. What patients need to know is that lipo is not a miracle cure. It was and is never intended to cure morbid obesity. Excessively overweight persons may first need to undergo gastric bypass or stomach stapling before going through liposuction.

More often than not, lipo needs a skilled surgeon because setting on the amount of anesthetic that can be used safely requires experience. Liposuction involves injection of a fluid that contains both anesthesia and adrenaline. The purpose of this fluid is to remove fat cells as long as there is adrenaline in the body. If the surgeon has gone awry in the estimation of excess fat, the patient can be in for serious issues.

Other Factors

Being a cosmetic procedure, most medical insurance may not pay for liposuction surgical operations. We all know the cost of this surgery is quite steep. Less expensive surgeons may be available, but the trade-off can be lack of experience and skill. This is certainly not a desirable option. There is another important factor patients must consider. A lipo surgeon always advises patients to stay clear of anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant drugs

prior to and after surgery to prevent complications. This may not always be possible to many who are on medication for certain disorders.

Lipo will no doubt make you look like a celebrity if the procedure is done by a certified and a skilled surgeon. So, use abundant caution before you go ahead.
