The Timeless Monochrome Look

by Tate Smith

The monochrome look is not a new one and usually puts in an appearance now and again. This striking combination is worn by people of all ages and background who like the clean lines and duality of these two colours.

Simply black and white

Black and white is a staple of any fashionista's wardrobe and provides endless possibilities for experimentation. Monochrome can be worn by itself or broken up by the addition of colour, for example, wearing a brightly coloured scarf against a black and white striped top which adds a touch of contrast.

But many people prefer not to sully the crisp, clean lines that are the main feature of the monochrome look.

Chic and stylish

Monochrome never fails to impress and is a clean, fresh look which attracts attention in any situation. For men, a sharp Italian suit in black paired with a crisp white shirt and black tie says that the wearer is classy and cool. For women, a black and white shift dress is striking and guaranteed to turn heads wherever you go.

Add a few carefully chosen accessories such as a pair of silver cufflinks in that pristine white shirt or black and white Dior earrings and you have an outfit which is both effortless and stylish.

Fashion favourite

The monochrome look is a popular theme with designers who love its simplicity and timeless qualities. Black and white outfits often make an appearance on catwalks around the world with designers showing new ways of working with this ever popular combo.

This means various combinations, e.g. black and white stripes, spots, checks etc, often presented in new and innovative ways. One way is to pair a black blazer, edged with white piping with a pair of white jeans. Another option is to wear a black jacket over a black shirt for an edgy, 'assassin' type look.

If you fancy reinventing the Beatnik look then go for the black polo neck and black pants combo. Although this can also state 'I am a French Left Bank intellectual' depending upon on your mood.

A variation on this theme is black and cream: why not wear black and cream instead of black and white if you are looking for a softer, less strident look. But if you want to make a bold statement then nothing less than black and white will do.

Splash of colour

A popular theme is that of adding a splash of colour here and there as a means of adding a bit of zing to an outfit but the trick is not to go overboard with this. You don't want to ruin that delicate balance between black and white so keep it fairly low key instead.

Monochrome has been a popular fashion trend in the past and will continue to be so now and into the future. The main reason for this is the timelessness and 'ease of use' of this classy combo.
