Should You Convert Your Garage?

It's just sitting there…

by Sam Qam

Thanks to the shoddy nature of car body work that was produced many years ago, it was not possible to leave a car outside open to the elements with it eventually going rusty. This meant that every home had to be built with a garage attached or nearby so that car owners could keep their vehicles safe.

Now however, modern car bodywork technology is highly resistant to the elements and can happily sit outside all year round. Plus they are much more secure so there is even less need for them to be locked in a garage.

What this means is that there are now thousands of garages in the UK sitting next to homes feeling seriously left out. This will have given you the idea: perhaps you should convert it into something actually useful? This would be a very good idea, and here's why:

Increase Value of your Home

First and foremost, adding an extra room on to your property will 99% of time, add value. The expanded floor space, the additional room and new layout will always be appealing to potential buyers, except of course for the ones that want a garage.

More Space

Also, it provides you with a lot of new space that was before a space just for your watering can and some spiders. Think of the possibilities of what you could change it into. You may want to be practical and turn it into a new kitchen or a spare bedroom. However you may have enough of those already and have the luxury of being able to turn it into a games room, a home cinema, a gym or maybe even an indoor swimming pool. Granted a very small swimming pool, but a swimming pool none-the-less.

More Security

Garage conversions will in fact also make your house more secure. Garages tend to be built with quite thin walls in order to maximise the space inside and because there is less need for insulation and heating. When you convert your garage you will undoubtedly add proper walls all the way round, perhaps with some double glazing if you make it into a house extensions, but certainly and most importantly with extra bricks.

Also, the fact that you will be using your garage a lot more as a normal room means that you will go in there more often and indeed be able to notice if anything is awry.

That should be you convinced so what are you waiting for?
