Christmas Is Coming - Ask Santa For Outdoor Gear You Can Use When Rafting The Grand Canyon
Anyone who is fortunate enough to be planning a Colorado River rafting trip next year has a ready-made list of Christmas requests. There are dozens of outdoor gear items to ask for, from the very inexpensive to those running to three figures. Some of the items depend on when you go, but keep in mind that even at the height of summer you'll want clothing that will keep you warm and dry. Not only is the white water cold and ever-present, but it is also not uncommon to be soaked from above by sudden storms that can pack both pounding rain and icy hail.
On the subject of clothing, although wool is traditionally the fabric of warmth, synthetics are much more practical when rafting on the Colorado river, since they dry more quickly and tend to wick the moisture away from the body when they do get wet. A packing list that goes from top to bottom includes a cap or sunhat and fleece winter hat, followed by jacket and pants made of fleece and others made for the rain, lightweight long sleeved shirt and a sweater or sweatshirt for warmth, both long and short pants (convertible cargo pants are excellent space-savers), and swim suits and tee shirts for days spent on the beach.
Whitewater rafting guides advise that special attention be given to the feet when rafting or camping on the beach. Because being on the river necessitates repeatedly getting one's feet wet with little drying time between, cuts and abrasions don't have a chance to heal properly. This situation can lead to extreme discomfort at the least and a nasty infection at the worst. As in the army, foot care is paramount when rafting on the Colorado River, so be sure to include several pairs of warm socks and a change of comfortable shoes, sneakers or ankle boots in your pack.
Small items for your duffel should include a pair of good sunglasses, plenty of sunscreen, towels, washcloths and bug spray. And don't forget extra batteries for both your camera and flashlight. As for the larger things, like tents, life jackets, fishing tackle and the raft itself, booking your vacation with an experienced guide or camping company will save you the trouble and expense of these basics. Most of what you will need is included in your package; if you aren't sure which items to bring along, contact your guide for a complete list. Then just hand it to Santa, relax and have a happy holiday and a well-appointed vacation.
