Saving Families By Knowing Sibling Rivalry
Sibling rivalry is a kind of problem found in many families. Large families comprising of many children tend to have greater issues of sibling rivalry because each of these children wants attention from parents. This type of competition is especially prevalent among young children but sometimes it persists even unto adulthood. Children learn how to compare among each other the manner their parents treat them and many times, comparison leads to resentment and rebellion.
Birth order has also been considered as a factor in sibling rivalry. First and last born children are often strong willed and stubborn. Middle children are generally conformists. Birth order is considered an interesting topic by psychologists in order to understand human behaviour better. Whether sibling rivalry is big or small, the effect it has on the family is influential.
There are many conscientious parents who feel stressed when they see their children fight and they do their best to stop and prevent their children from quarrelling. Unresolved issues often lead to bearing grudges and these grudges are manifested in the later years. As children grow into their teenage years, self expression and independence are showing more dominantly. It's during this critical period that teens learn how to experiment on doing activities which are dangerous and unhealthy just to get the attention of their parents. One of these tempting and common activities is binge drinking.
Binge drinking involves heavy drinking of alcoholic drinks on certain occasions. The law forbids underage alcohol drinking but many teens are able to purchase and consume alcohol from illicit sources. Cases involving underage drinking are large in alcohol treatment programs. Teenagers involved in petty crimes are also increasing. Accidents caused by driving under the influence of alcohol are also common problems among teens.
Counselors recommend parents of the importance of solving sibling rivalry early in order to avoid bigger conflicts in the future. If parents resolve issues with their kids while they are young, these children can adjust with each other's differences. No 2 persons are exactly alike even if they belong to one family- even twins! In situations where unresolved issues have escalated into adulthood, negative behaviors like alcoholism may already be established. Seeking treatment is the immediate answer. Therapy in alcohol rehabilitation centers involves the entire family in order to go deeper into the real cause of the addiction. The involvement of the whole family contributes to continuous recovery and abstinence from alcoholic drinks. Strengthening family relationships serves as a balm in the wounds that may be invisible to the human eye.
