The True Value of Christening Gowns

by Andrew Bui

In many Christian circles there's only one thing more important than finding the perfect christening gowns for a child's big day, and that one thing happens to be none other than the big day itself and all the special symbolism that comes with it. There are many different spins on the core beliefs relating to the practice of infant baptism, but in each denomination the basic ceremony is performed almost the same. The general consensus is that christening is a rite of passage in which the baby is introduced into their life with Christ, and the gown is a way to remember the event forever.

In the Christian faith men and woman are baptized in water to symbolize their spirit being cleansed by God's grace and their sins being washed away. They are put under the water to illustrate the act of being washed clean. Many orthodox Christian churches baptize each new soul as it is born into their community as a way of welcoming them.

After being baptized the infant is recognized as a new part of the church's community and Christ . Becoming a part of Christ's family is not always considered an instantaneous event, but is instead done through the christening with the blessing of the child's mother and father. This is why many denominations consider this a coming of age celebration.

A church may not always recognize the christening gown as an integral component of the baptism, but mothers and fathers hold them in high regards for many reasons. The christening gown is typically all white to symbolize the wholesomeness of the newly cleansed soul. It is not unusual to find most christening gowns made of the finest material. Often they are long and flowing with layer after layer drenched in lace. Some are composed of understated lace and silk. Many are designed to make your baby girl look like she is on her way to an enchanted ball while some are more down to earth and modest. It is a great excuse to dress up, but no particular outfit is better than any other.

The most substantial aspect of christening gowns for most families is their function as a keepsake. Like a picture album, a baby book, or a lock of a newborn's hair; these outfits symbolize a moment to be cherished. In most families it is a time honored tradition to pass the same gown from one child to the next for generation after generation. A christening gown is something you should consider very valuable whether you decide to keep it or hand it down.
