Pomeranian Training: Tips On How To Teach Your Dog To Perform Tricks

by Rebecca Golding

Pomeranian training is more than just teaching a pomeranian the fundamental obedience commands or the proper way to potty. Training is in fact, helpful in a lot of ways than that. It can help prevent various behavior issues or help eliminate the problem if it has affected your pet already. And while pomeranians have lesser possibility of undergoing training to become working dogs, the breed is more famous for their desire to delight their owners by being around them most of the time, by being very friendly and by doing tricks that can also please others.

One simple trick that is very easy to teach your pom is paw. Also referred to as shake hands, the trick happens when your pet gives his paw on you. This trick is possible even if your dog is standing, sitting or in down position. To get started with the training, say the command "paw", take his paw and place it in your hands. Reward your pet with a treat and repeat the process. After introducing a command and trying it a few times, do not take your pom's paw soon after you give the command the next time you try the process. Wait for a second or two and when he brings his paw up to you, reward him with treat or praise. If not, then start at the beginning. Do it a few times and then start increasing the time between responses again. Continue with the process until such time in which your dog gets to figure out how the command works.

The next trick to teach your pet during pomeranian training is crawl. Training must start by having your dog in down position facing you. Hold a treat right in front of your pet's nose, give the command "crawl" and then gradually move the treat in your direction (away from your pom) while keeping it close to the ground. When your pet makes any effort to crawl to get the treat, reward that treat to him along with praise. Repeat the process right until he masters the command.

Just like crawl, roll over starts by having your dog in down position. Kneel down close to your pet then hold a treat right before his face. Say the command roll over and move the treat so that he'll have to lie on his side and eventually roll over. Should he make any move to roll over, reward him with a treat and praise. This trick may need numerous repetition so you need to be very patient.

Spin or turn around is another trick you may want to include during pomeranian training. Get your pom to stand in front of you then hold a treat in front of his nose. Say the command spin or turn around while moving your hand with the treat in a circular motion. Guide your dog to be able to complete a circle and once he has done so, reward him with the treat you are holding.

The above-mentioned tricks are commonly taught using a treat however, it is best to cut down the use of reward to stop him from becoming treat-dependent.
