Why Cycling Is Great For The Elderly

Ditch the bus pass Grandpa…

by Sam Qam

Cycling is one of the most universal pass times which anyone of any age can enjoy. Right up to the stage where balance and grip becomes an issue, cycling can be enjoyed by the elderly. Despite the fact roads are getting more and more dangerous and drivers are getting more impatient, there are probably more elderly cyclists on the road now than ever before. More cycle paths and cycle lanes, better quality cheaper bikes and more encouragement from local cycle groups and elderly communities have all helped make this possible.

If you are a bit older or know someone who is older and might be up for cycling, here are some reasons why cycling is great:

Exercise

Of course one of the most important things an older person will gain from taking up cycling is the chance to get a bit more exercise. Walking and swimming and other exercise activities commonly pursued by the older generation need not be the limit. Cycling is perfectly possible and can even be a lot easier to take part in as there is a lot less pressure on joints and feet.

Out and about

For some older people it can be difficult to get out and about from time to time. Being able to cycle opens up a whole range of destinations which, if you were walking, may have felt out of range and left you to stay indoors. There are even elderly cycling groups starting up in many cities through social networking connections that have guides and support to make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable trip. It can also be hard to find likeminded individuals when you are a bit older so these connections can really help with that too. Plus you can arrange to share bike car racks too.

Excitement

These elderly cycle groups, as well as just cycling in general, is an exciting hobby. The thrill of zooming down hills and swooping along country tracks on a hybrid bike is enjoyable for all ages, but if you are a bit older and had not considered cycling something you could do, taking it up now would make your life that little bit more thrilling than it might be. As people get older it is easy to switch off and start to feel older than you really need to. Cycling or any other type of exercise can prevent this.

Grand kids

One final reason why cycling is a great new option for the elderly is that if you are lucky enough to have grandkids, you will be able to go out cycling with them?
