Stress and its Impact on our Working Life

Often we hear about “I am under Stress”, “my boss is under pressure” etc. The problem of stress is not peculiar to formal workplace like an office or a business establishment, even housewives undergo stress. Stress arises when a person is unable to meet the demands of the situation owing to his mental and / or physical incapacity. It also arises when the external environment is not conductive for a person to discharge his duties. In short, a person is prone to stress conditions when he has to encounter critical situations often in his life. Ajay Shukla defined Stress as a form of tension or strain in the body or the mind for which there is no release or outlet.

The cause factor of stress can be divided into two. One is Personal Factors and other is Organisational Factors. Ability, Perception, Manner of approaching crisis, Level of self confidence, Experience, Desire for work, Beliefs are the Personal Factors responsible for stress. Nature of job, Superior - subordinate relationship, Inter - personal relationship, Target to be reached, Time pressure, Physical working conditions, Opportunities for advancement, Hours of work, Disparity in pay and other benefits, Biased assessment of performance, Greater responsibilities and Punitive measures like demotion, suspension etc. are the Organisational Factors causing stress.

Stress may be physical as well as mental and is not always bad.. Certain amount of stress, in fact, is necessary to secure performance. Absence of stress means lack of job challenges and as a result, performance will tend to be low. On the other hand, when stress becomes excessive, the employ will not be able to cope with it and as a result performance will begin to decline.

Prevent, Escape and Cope are the three basic approaches to manage the stress. Counselling is the one of the effective method to manage.

In the context of job stress, counseling is important as it improves the mental health of the affected employee. The important functions of the counselling are: Advice, Reassurance, Communication, and Release of emotional tension, Clarified thinking and Reorientation.
