Stop dreaming - How to change your life.

by Janet Fraser

STOP DREAMING - HOW TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE Are you trapped in a job with few prospects and little or no recognition? Is your work dull, repetitive and routine? Do you dream of freedom and independence to be your own boss? It's a tough call to give up a regular salary and a benefits package. However, many people do it every day; for them there is no question of not doing it! They can see beyond the safety net and recognise that for them they have no choice but to take the challenges self-employment brings. They can visualise the rewards: the satisfaction and personal pride in taking the first step, the excitement and the thrill of the challenge.

Are you an entrepreneur? Not all entrepreneurs are risk-takers with several failures behind them before they make their millions. In reality very few make millions most make a good living. Entrepreneurs don't need a unique idea to go into business. Instead, look around you for the types of business that appeals to you and your skills. Ask yourself, "How would I improve this business?" Use your creativity to copy the competition, and then do it better.

Dealing with the critics People will think you're crazy to give up the security of a regular job. Many will tell you that they've always dreamt of it but have never had the courage in the first place. All will envy you.

Lifestyle or empire? You may be considering self-employment because you are at an age where you have less family ties and are more financially secure. You may be ready for new opportunities to develop yourself and achieve self-fulfilment. You may choose self-employment because you want to make serious money, to build an empire. All successful, self-employed people have the same traits. They are driven. They have a passion for everything they do and they can visualise themselves making a success of it. Before embarking on the biggest change of your life ask yourself some questions. How well do you cope with pressure, disappointment and setbacks? How much commitment would you give? Do you have a ‘can do' attitude? What have you done in your life that makes you know this? If you recognise these qualities in yourself you have what it takes. You will relish the excitement, the recognition, the satisfaction and the reputation that you will build. You do however need to be a realist.

Take the short cut Having desire and passion for your business is not enough. Your main aim must be, to make money. The high rate of business failures testify to this. Money is your only measure of success. Get a mentor, someone who has already been successful in business. Get them on board to help you put the business on a sound footing. Use business experts and government support agencies. Network, join business groups, use the Internet to contact other entrepreneurs for advice and information.

Lastly Self-employment takes over your life, it becomes your life. In the excitement it's easy to become self-absorbed and forget the important things. Make time for family and friends, if you don't someone else will. Be confident and believe in yourself but at the same time don't be arrogant. Make people want to deal with you. Balance toughness with humility and you will get what you want.
