Scuba Diving Andes Wall - Grand Cayman

by Leon Tallas

On your next scuba diving trip to Grand Cayman be sure to dive on Andes Wall, you will certainly not be disappointed. This dive site is positively one of my preferred dive sites on the island and is reachable from the West Side dive boat operators or out of Rum Point. This is a interesting wall dive and is a magnificent location for underwater photography. Andes Wall can be found just past Rum Point on the North Wall. Typical conditions on this dive site are 100+ feet of visibility and at the dive site there is a sheer drop along the wall of several thousand feet.

Andes Wall is approximately 10 to 15 minutes beyond Rum Point on the North Side and one of my two preferred dive sites on the North Wall. You may dive this site as a shallow dive on top of the wall or as a wall dive however, I would highly advocate the wall dive.

As you head down to the mooring be alert as you may come across Spotted Eagle Rays, sharks, Great Barricuda, or sea turtles and you will definitely become aware of the healthy state of the hard and soft corals. This is a site that abounds with a assortment of marine species and you should positively enjoy the dive.

There are regularly a great range of fish on this dive. On this dive we saw Schoolmasters, numerous types of Basslets, Princess Parrotfish, Bermuda Chub, Blue Chromis, Trumpetfish, Gray Angelfish, Spiny Lobsters, Spotted Eagle Rays and much, much more. The soft corals are wonderful on this portion of the island and they are especially abundant in and around the mooring ball on this dive. You will find a number interesting places to take photos of sea fans, or sea rods, sea whips and naturally numerous multicolored stony corals too. and a great deal more.

The soft corals are awesome on this part of the island and they are exceptionally plentiful in and around the mooring ball on this dive. You can find a number excellent locations to take photographs of sea fans, or sea rods, sea whips and obviously many colorful stony corals as well.

Then I got one of my better shots of the dive trip. I was setting up to take a shot of a Giant Slit-Pore Sea Rod and looking up in direction of the sun to frame the soft coral I noticed one of the Spotted EagleRays that was following us throughout the dive and repositioned a little and the rest...well I must leave it up to the photograph to speak for itself. Needless to say I really believe I found a excellent image.... This area is magical and as a scuba diver it is a must dive when you come to Grand Cayman and if you happen to be an underwater photographer, maybe you will make a little magic of your own. Go to my website or my blog for more information. The pool is open.....
