Some Tips for a More Pleasant Work Life

With a lot of people projected to work longer thanks to the government raising the retirement age in the UK, it is important that people are happy with/at their jobs. This article should help people that are unhappy at work or anywhere else for that matter.

Believe this or not, but did you know that when you're unhappy, it's because you've decided to be unhappy. Now majority of the time, it isn't a conscious decision; maybe it slyly crept up on you while your back was turned-but it was a decision regardless. Fret not, because that's actually good news, HOW is that good news? I hear you asking, it is good because you can flip this dilemma around decide instead to be happy. You just need to understand how and why you make the decisions.

Are you being limited by your rules? Happiness and unhappiness both in work and in life outside work arise entirely from the rules which you use personally to evaluate events occurring around you. These rules aid you in determining what's worth focusing your time and effort on. Most people have and set rules that make it really difficult for them to happy and unbelievably easy for them to be miserable.

Be aware of what is happening to you and around you, this increased observation will allow you to monitor what your rules are and if they are impacting your happiness.Take for instance 2 salesmen working the same company, 1 of these men has set himself a rule that he would only be happy when he brings in £1 million worth of business a year, this becomes his reason to get up in the morning but when he made that rule up he made it difficult to be happy and more importantly easy to be miserable.

Salesman number 2 however didn't set such lofty goals, but his rule was everyday he got to wake up and go to work was a good day, he had the uncanny ability to recover from whatever life threw his way and come out of it still smiling. He made it incredibly easy to be happy and quite difficult to be miserable.

How to make yourself happier in 3 Steps Earlier i said the decision to be unhappy was good because you can decide to be happy, the 3 steps below should help you on your way in DECIDING to be happy.

1. Document Your Current Rules-Take some time to yourself as soon as you are ready,(approx 30 minutes), being brutally honest with yourself, write down "your" answers to these 2 questions: What has to happen for me to be happy? What has to happen for me to be unhappy?Your answers are your "rules", now that you have written them down, examine them. Keeping the honesty theme going, after having examined your rules, have you made it easier to miserable than to be happy? If you have, then congratulations your plan is probably working.

2. Create better rules-Engage your imagination, create and record a new set of rules which would make it easier for you to be happy, once "your" rules are re-calibrated for your happiness, you will find that it will become more and more difficult to be miserable. Examples: "I enjoy driving to work each day." "I really hate it when snows heavily." You shouldn't worry whether or not these rules seem "realistic"-that defeats the purpose of the exercise. You will find out sooner or later that all internal rules are arbitrary, anyway. All you have to do is write rules that would make you happier if you really believed them. Which is why i have tried to emphasize the fact that it is "Your" own set of rules, the old parable comes to mind, "you can lead a horse to water, but you cant make him drink". You have to believe.

3. Place the New Rules somewhere you will be able to them.-Once you have finished writing down your new rules, have it printed into whatever format you want, i.e. posters, flyers, postcards. Once printed you will to place them in places where you can see them, 3 of the most common places to place them are: the dashboard of your car, your bathroom mirror, and the side of your computer screen. It is also advisable to leave them up even if you memorise them. The placement of the new rules, is place you frequent will help to gradually re-program your mind to Believe the new rules.

The whole point of this exercise is stress to you that you are responsible for your own happiness, and with time being so precious is it really in your interest to be unhappy about menial things? The choice is and always will be yours.
