Cell phone recycling

by Enrique Perales

Recyling cell phones is the last thing I had in mind when I went into the cell phone business. I went into the business to sell service and make commission off of the activation, which is quit profitable if I might say. The idea came to me when my 12 year old daughter asked me five years ago what I did with my old cell phones that did not work or were obsolite on the cell phone network. My answer was simple. "I throw them in the trash". I'll never forget the look she gave me because I had about 300 cell phones lying around in my cell phone store. "You throw them in the trash, isn't that pollution" she asked? When I thought about it a little harder, I realized that over the years of being in business I must of disposed of about a little over 3000 cell phones by simply throwing it in the trash. My daughter recommended that we search the internet to see if the phones were recyclable. At first I figured I was wasting my time, but to please her, we did the search. Would you believe we found about 10 companies that buy these old cell phones, if they are in working order, if not they simlply get disposed of properly. So the next thing we did was contact a company called Pacebutler, this company sent us boxes for us to ship them the unwanted cell phones. Yes, they paid for the shipping, all we had to do was count the inventory, they did all the sorting. We sent these phones for recycling, and about 2 week later my daughter and I received a check for about $189.00 in the mail. We were both schocked, we didn't think that we were getting anything out of it, in fact I was doing more to please my daughter. Now we do this full time. We partnered up with Pacebutler and they supply all of the materials that are needed to start a fundraiser for recycling. Some handsets are worth .50 and some are worth up to $300.00. I have been recycling cell phones for about 4 years now and I believe that we have collected over 7000 unwanted cell phones, and have profited about $6000 tax free. All simply for recycling old cell phones. Try it there is no up front money that needs to be invested. Simply start with your friends and family and ask them for their unwanted cell phones working or non working. You will be surprised at how easily people give you these things. It's too easy.
