Cholesterol vs. C-reactive protein
Slash your risk of dying by 50% in 3 years.
Cholesterol is Normal in 80% of People that Die of Heart Attacks
Physicians used to think that if a patient had a normal cholesterol level they would not have a heart attack.** NO LONGER!** 50 to 80% of people dying from heart attacks have absolutely normal cholesterols. Drugs like Crestor (a "statin") have long been known to prevent second heart attacks. However, to prevent your first heart attack, you have to have a test that can predict if you are at risk. Since the cholesterol test misses at least 50% of people who are going to have a heart attack, we had to find a new test. Ten Minutes Can Save Your Life will explain how to find out if you are at risk; and what to do about it.

C-Reactive Protein To everyone's surprise, an old-fashioned test called a C-reactive protein (C-RP) turned out to be 4X's better than the cholesterol at predicting who is at risk for a heart attack. In one study of 30,000 women, 50% of the 1st heart attacks had normal cholesterols. All of the women having heart attacks with normal cholesterols however had an abnormal C-RP. A few women with normal C-RP's still had heart attacks if they had high cholesterols. So even though the C-RP is much more important than the cholesterol to predict your risk of heart attack and stroke; the cholesterol should still be done. Other studies have shown the same results for men.

Cholesterol vs. Lipid Profile Most doctors prefer a complete lipid profile to the simple cholesterol. The lipid profile includes not only the total cholesterol but how much is good cholesterol ( high-density lipoprotein or HDL ) and how much is bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein or LDL). Statins have proven to be the best medicine to prevent second heart attacks; but much more importantly they can keep you from having your first heart attack. Since as many as 25% of people having heart attacks die before even reaching the emergency room; this becomes very important to treat people who are "not sick" but are at high risk. Crestor is the newest statin. It is also the strongest, cheapest and safest. 96- 98% of people can take statins without any problems. If you take a statin you can have a 50% decrease in both 1st and 2nd heart attacks.

The only thing **better** than not having a second heart attackā¦.. is not having the first one.

Hardening of the Arteries is a Lifelong Process
50% of the 18 and 19-year-old boys killed in the Korean War were found on autopsy to already have significant hardening of the arteries going to their hearts. As many as one out of every three children, tested by their pediatricians, have elevated cholesterols. Common sense would make you think that low-fat diets would help lower your cholesterol. However in head-to-head studies the high-protein, high-fat and low carbohydrate diets actually resulted in more weight loss and lower cholesterols than the low-fat diets (Atkins vs. American Heart Association). Studies placing people on very strict diet and exercise programs, after their first heart attack, resulted in correction of their cholesterols only 10% of the time.
