Originally, there were only two phones that closed, they were the Kyocera 6035, 7135 and the Treo 300 series. Problem: While online, if you close the Smartphone it would cut your connection. This is a problem because sometimes, while downloading large web pages or large programs, it's nice to be able to close the phone and put in it's holster. This gives you time to do something else while you wait. The Kyocera 7135 is the only one that suffers from this at the present time. The Treo 300 and the Kyocera 6035 don't have this issue. I'm sure there will be more flips coming in the future, and I hope the manufacturers understand this issue when comes to the newer designs.
Since I mainly use the Kyocera 7135, this was a real problem. There are three ways to do it: 1. Carry a headset plug with you. (Cut the plug off of an old headset, and plug it in when you plan to close the Smartphone). I go through about two to three headsets each month. I'm really rough on them! This is somewhat a pain in the backside, but it works. 2. You can also configure your fax modem to receive on the next call. This needs to be done prior to logging on with your browser software. I've found that this sometimes doesn't work, it's kind-of, hit & miss. But for the most part, this works just fine. The problem I had was I could never remember to do this before logging on. I would never know if I'm going to be downloading large files or not. This is why I decided to just keep the plug in my case - just in case. 3. This is another hit & miss. If you set your Smartphone to 1xRTT, (One Times Radio Transmission Technology), it seems closing of the Smartphone doesn't have any effect on the connection. The connection operates off the carrier that your Smartphone is connected to the tower with. I have found that sometimes this doesn't work. The 1xRTT mode doesn't use the dialup portion of the phone. I'm trying to speak as Layman as I can. When you are in 1xRTT, no phone number is dialed to logon. So once the mode is set, it should stay there until unset. But that's not always the case. You can close the Smartphone while online and it will stay online for about five minutes before timing out. Then your browser will ask you to login again.

One Button Recording. By Robert Lett.

I think this works on most Palm Operating Systems (OS) with at least Palm OS 3.5 or higher?! While in the MemoPad, holding the "Memo" button for a few seconds, kicks in the voice recorder automatically. You do have to be in the MemoPad when doing this. If you are in any other application, just hit the Memo button once to get into the MemoPad. Then simply hold the Memo button on the Palm for a few seconds, and the voice recorder, (if you have this option/version of Palm), will kick in with the audio message: "Please record at the tone". And you then hear a tone and you are now recording. The only issue at this time is this; You only have about 2 to 2 an a half minutes of record time total. You might have 10 voice memo files with recordings in each, but you can only get about 2 to 2.5 minutes of total recording time. Soon there will be someone that writes a program that will defeat this issue. And remember, if you are using the Kyocera 7135 or most other Smartphones, you must have the cell phone part of the device "on". This is a nice feature that isn't in any of the manuals that I looked through. It allows for one handed operation of the voice recording system. So if you are driving or in the middle of something else, you can record your notes for later retrieval. I've used this feature a lot!!! I've almost smacked into the car in front of me trying to get a great idea I just came up with in my notes before I forgot what I was thinking about. And when you see another bumper coming up on you at 30 to 40 miles an hour, it has a way of making you forget that "great" idea you once had! Not to mention what it can do to the linens you might be wearing!
I know this is short but hey, it took me this long to think of writing a tips newsletter. What can I say.

Let me ask you a question: How much is your computer worth when you or your employee is sitting in front of it? Now, how much is that same computer worth when you or your employee isn't sitting in front of it? When you're out of the office and that important client calls, do you have to tell them that you will get in touch with them when you return to the office? Is that client calling your competition in the mean time? What if you had all your important files with you 24 hours a day, 7 days week. All hanging on your belt in the form of a cell phone that you probably carry anyway. Be productive 24/7, anywhere - anytime!
