Cancun Sister Cities
Sister cities have become very popular for creating cooperative agreements between various localities and nations. Used today to promote culture, the first known practice of this is on record as occurring in 836 BCE with France and Germany striking up an alliance of this sort. Sister cities have only grown in popularity since the second world war, and have led the way in showcasing the different cultural aspects of different regions, while also allowing international work on desired projects to occur. An unlikely pairing up of Toledo, Spain and Toledo, Ohio was also established early on, and was a first in North America.
Mexico is a country with a diverse set of cultural groups and ecosystems that differ between regions. It is therefore appropriate that Cancun have a sister city relationship with the Island of Cozumel, which lies just six miles off the shores of the hospitality zone in Cancun. Cozumel is small, just 250 square miles and its largest community is San Miguel.
The island itself is limestone, and the waters surrounding the beaches are loaded with cenotes. Cozumel is unique from Cancun in that cenotes are located in Cozumel but not in Cancun.. Underwater vertical caverns called cenotes, form over great lengths of time, in the soft limestone.. Sea water works on the limestone, gradually over time, as it is a very soft stone, and causes pits and tunnels to easily be created.. When the dust settles, unique ecosystems develop in these sheltered underwater caves.
Cancun is a place where showcasing the wonders of Mexico is a daily mission. Everyday visitors arrive for their own taste of Mexican culture, whether it is in the form of food, beaches or souvenirs. Mexico has a welcoming, colorful culture, with all aspects of the tourism industry working hard to make visitors' stays in Cancun and other regions very special.. Cozumel, on the other hand is all about appreciating the coral reefs, minutely delicate ecosystems established there and the tumultuous history of the island itself. The beach area of Cozumel is a sought after retreat area for Cancun travelers to chill from the hectic pace of resort areas..
It's clear, when all is considered, that there are benefits with the sister city relationship between Cancun and Cozumel.. Although closely located, each area is uniquely different.. Yet they share a mutually beneficial relationship through providing services to tourists. Instead of working to abscond with each other's tourism dollars, the communities exchange resources and support each other. After all, they are sisters.
