With ski season fast approaching it's about time you started preparing for this year's epic snow-based trip!

A commonly overlooked aspect of your trip, which is nonetheless very important, is insuring yourself whilst you are away. We should remember that skiing and other Winter sports are more dangerous than the sports that we ordinarily take part in and regular travel insurance rarely covers you due to the extra risks involved.

The fact that ski trips are very much seasonal means that we do them less and many of us often get ahead of ourselves and take risks that we shouldn't whilst on our skis or board. Winter sports injuries are common and can range from aches and strains to the dreaded broken bones. The very fact that you are based on a slippery surface all day poses a hazard in itself so be sure to choose a comprehensive insurance deal. You should purchase a policy that will cover you against on and off-piste skiing as well as snowboarding.

Winter sports travel can cover far more than injury though. Ski and snowboard equipment is often very expensive and a good insurance policy will cover your equipment in the event of loss or damage. An annoying drawback of skiing is that equipment is easily damaged, so back it up with Winter sports travel insurance. Often, a policy will also cover you in the event of breaking hired equipment so you need not worry if you snap borrowed skis whilst attempting an audacious flip or spin!

Many brokers will also give you the option of multi-trip or single-trip cover. If you are looking to make the most of the ski season, then you should certainly choose multi-cover. We also recommend taking the multi-trip option if you are looking to ski more than once in the year or even if you are tentatively looking at booking another trip. This way you need not worry about going through the mundane process of finding cover again, saving time and effort in the long run.

Don't forget to make sure your policy also covers you against the usual travel insurance necessities such as lost luggage, flight delays and cancellations. After putting so much hard work into finding winter sport insurance, it would be a great shame to lose out by not covering yourself in the event of a cancelled flight or lost baggage.

Now go out there and have fun! Don't hit too many trees!!
