Design Your Web Page to Get to the Top of Google

Primer for Getting to the Top of Google

by Victor Krumm

Interested in how to get to the top of Google Search Results? With a little research, you can get there. Literally

When I use the term "get to the top of Google", I'm talking about the first or second page of its Search Results.

Why is this important? Consider:

All the search engines, including Google, typically show 10 search results per page and there can be dozens or more pages, each with 10 results.

If you can get to the #1 displayed search result, you might get over 40% of all the web traffic clicks. But, if your website is displayed at the top of the third page (#21 in the results) or lower, expect to share just 1% of all the clicks for the search term.

Now, don't misunderstand me. The third page of Google does produce traffic, of course but for more web traffic, lots more, don't settle for the third page if, with a bit better design and work, you might get onto the first page.

Stunning as it sounds, nearly 90% of all click-thru web traffic goes to the one of the first ten websites in an SE's Search Results. So, of course, you want to be there.

But, how can it be remotely possible that you can be on your way to the top of Google before writing a single word? How?

In a word: knowledge. "Knowledge is power"-Sir Francis Bacon It's as true today as it has always been.

Armed with knowledge, using free research tools, and implementing a demonstrated strategy that works, you can rise in the Search Results and maybe even get nearly to the top of Google---and maybe all the way. That's a fact.

Here's how. Find a keyword that has both of these characteristics:

1. 3,000 or more global searches a month and 2. 80,000 or fewer competing pages (the fewer the better)

Then, market that page for both traffic and links. Write articles, post to blogs, bookmark the page for social networking sites.

The Google Adwords Keyword Tool will display the number of monthly global searches. The reason I recommend 3,000 as a minimal value is that anything less probably will produce little traffic.

To see how many competing pages you'll be up against, use the Google browser (not Yahoo or Bing), and enter your keyword between quotation marks. For example, "put your keyword into parenthesis like this."

Design your web page around appropriate keywords and you'll be on your way to the top of Google.

But, there's one more thing. Some people talk about how nice it'd be to get to the top of Google while others are actually serious about doing so. If you fall into the latter category, you'll need to find your competitors' weaknesses and exploit them. Often, those weaknesses take the form of low PR, few back links, and poor SEO techniques. Fortunately, there's a great tool to quickly evaluate your competitors' strengths and identify their weaknesses but it'll cost you a few bucks. It's worth every penny and more to serious webmasters.

To get to the top of Google imagine you are a team trying to reach the Super Bowl. First, you have to get into the playoffs and, if you design your web page around a keyword that has more than 3,000 searches a month and fewer than 80,000 competing pages, your chances are excellent.

Once there, the Super Bowl ring can be yours if you take advantage of your competitors' weaknesses. Use the right search engine optimization competition analysis tool and you'll identify their strengths and weaknesses at a glance.

Knowledge is indeed power---and the ticket to get to the top of Google.
