AFTER 66 YEARS, HEROIC NAVY VETERAN GETS HIS MEDAL

Carl Clark was 29 years old when he saved the lives of several of his shipmates aboard the USS Aaron Ward as the ship was attacked by Japanese kamikazes during World War II. He also put out a fire that might have split his ship in half. At the time, his heroics went largely unrecognized because Clark is black. But recently, that was set right as the now 95-year-old Clark was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with the Combat Distinguished Device. It is possible that Clark will be the last living veteran of World War II to receive a combat medal.

MILLIONAIRE KICKS IN HALF THE MONEY NEEDED TO REPAIR WASHINGTON MONUMENT

A 2011 earthquake did about $15 million worth of damage to the Washington Monument in the nation's capital. Congress approved $7.5 million for repairs and the government planned to seek private donors for the rest. But then a single donor—David Rubenstein—decided he'd donate the other $7.5 million himself. Rubenstein has also made a $13.5 million donation to the National Archives and a $4.5 million donation to the National Zoo's giant panda program. With Rubenstein's donation in hand, repairs to the Washington Monument will take at least a year. It has been closed to the public since the earthquake.

CRIME FIGHTING BIRD CHIRPS? MAYOR OF LANCASTER, CA SAYS ITS WORKING

Ah, the pleasant sound of birds chirping in the trees. Or at least from the 70 speakers along a half mile stretch of road in Lancaster, California. For 10 months, recordings of bird song (along with a few other blended sounds) have played for five hours each day in Lancaster. The mayor, R. Rex Parris, says all that chirping has led to a 15 percent drop in crime. Why? Because the bird song mellows people out. Some folks think the plan is bird-brained at best and isn't responsible for the reduction in crime. But for now, the experiment is ongoing in the community of 157,000 people.
