Walking In The Steps of Jesus
No matter what your background or religion, you have likely heard about Jesus. Christians believe he came to save the world while others believe that maybe he was a prophet or just a troublemaker. Taking a trip to the Holy Land is often the dream of Christians or others interested in religion or history. On an Israel tour, one will likely see places where Jesus lived, performed miracles and died on the cross. Christians particularly find the trip fascinating due to the impact that the life of Jesus has had on their own personal lives.
Taking a trip to Israel means visiting places from the Bible that involve the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The birthplace of Jesus was Bethlehem, a site that you will surely want to visit. Jesus was born to a young woman named Mary. She was with her husband, Joseph, in Bethlehem. They were there due to a decree that a census be taken by the emperor Caesar Augustus of the Romans. They were unable to find a room in the inn, however, due to the large number of people in Bethlehem. Jesus had to be born in a stable in Bethlehem, which is also where the shepherds saw angels proclaiming his birth.
Nazareth is another important city in the life of Jesus. This is the city where Jesus grew up. After John the Baptist was put into prison by Herod, Jesus moved from Nazareth to Capernaum. Jesus and his disciples resided in Capernaum. While walking by the Sea of Galilee near Capernaum, Jesus called Peter and His brother Andrew to follow Him. Jesus also called James and John the sons of Zebedee and all four of these men were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee. This is also where Matthew was called to follow Jesus. Jesus performed many miracles in Capernaum.
Near Capernaum is the Mount of Beatitudes. This is thought to be the site of the Sermon on the Mount although the exact location is unknown. On this hillside, Jesus taught His disciples about being faithful followers of God. Nearby is the Sea of Galilee. It was here that Jesus walked on the water to save his disciples during the terrible storm at sea. A great deal of Jesus' ministry was centered near the Sea of Galilee.
The Garden of Gethsemane was often visited by Jesus and his disciples. Located just outside of Jerusalem, on the Mount of Olives, it is a small olive grove. Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus at this spot. The Via Dolorosa was the path taken by Jesus through Jerusalem on his way to his death at Calvary. The Place of the Skull, or Golgatha, is where Jesus was crucified. The Garden Tomb is where Jesus' body was laid to rest after his crucifixion.
Taking a trip to the Holy Land and following the steps of Jesus will give you the adventure of a lifetime. As you experience the culture of the Holy Land, you will leave a changed person. It's no wonder that those who take trips to the Holy Land know that they must return as soon as possible!
