Apple's iPhone 3G and 4G

by Anne Emerick

The iPhone 3G was released in July 2008 with support from big name network carrier AT&T. These were long anticipated iPhones found high praise for their features, but there were no shortage of complaints from early customers. The most frequent complaint heard from Apple iPhone users about the 3G iPhone was the quality of the plastic casing of the phone. Reports of casings that were easy to crack started flooding in. Many 3G iPhone users also had major problems with the iOS 4.1 app on many of the iPhones they purchased. Apple assured their iPhone customers that most of these problems would be dissolved with the upgrade of the iOS 4.2. And indeed many of these issues were resolved.

A massive breakdown in the infrastructure of setting the iPhones up for customer usage became a nightmare for some customers. Giving in to the hordes of dissatisfied customers, Apple finally allowed for the phones to be activated outside their carrier's store, resolving another early headache.

The 3G iPhone not only brought a plethora of high technology with its GPS apps, but it also made the world sit up and take notice with its video capabilities. Excited iPhone owners loved the ability to transfer videos directly from their iPhone to YouTube, which just increased demand further. The options of the iPhone for Gigabytes were from the ranges of 8 and 16. Coming out with a bit sleeker design modifications, the iPhone become a real competitor in the smartphone arena. While many of the features on the iPhone 3G existed in other smartphones, with a bit sleeker design and new applications appearing every day ("Hey, there's an app for that!"), the iPhone instantly took a big share of smartphone market.

The iPhone 4G was released in 2010 and much hype surrounded its arrival. Eager buyers looking for the latest smartphone technology waited in long lines and crowded stores reported record-breaking sales. Heralded as the thinnest smartphone on the block, the 4G proved its smartphone capabilities with an unheard of 326-pixel-per-inch, front facing camera. The video capacities were outstanding also, with the user-friendly ability to cut and edit videos on the spot. The 4G also sported a gyroscope for more realistic gaming options with apps.

The iPhone 4G comes with more memory (16G or 32G) than the iPhone 3G. While the phones themselves are pretty reasonably priced ($199 for 16G 4G model, $299 for 32G 4G model, $49 for a 3G) , the usage plans are very costly. The most basic cellphone usage plan from AT&T costs $60 a month and a plan that includes data usage is another $40 a month. It will be interesting to see whether Sprint's joint venture with Apple to support the iPhone on the Sprint network will create enough competition for iPhone fans to bring the price down.

If you already own an iPhone or know someone who does, a great gift idea is a unique iPhone case.
