3-2-1: Being the Best

Trainer Training

by PrepMasters

3 Techniques for Gaining Attention

• Show enthusiasm and let your students know you really want to be there. Plant your feet squarely on the ground. Create eye contact with each of your participants. Smile and speak with authority.

• Create interest by warming up the audience. Get people in the mood you want them to be in. You can play music that sets the tone, have them to introduce themselves or start off with an exercise.

• Begin with an audience participation technique. Ask questions (without putting anyone on the spot) or conducting a brain teaser.

2 Expressions to Avoid When Training

• “Do you understand“: This automatically places the learner on the defensive. Another option: “Have I explained it okay“: This places the responsibility for your student’s understanding on you, not the student.

• “You should do it this way“: Who really likes to be told what to do? Another option: “You could do it this way” or “There are a few options that I know of (explain). Which do you think would be most effective?” Encourage your students to participate and take away the dictatorial attitude since it may create antagonism.
