Anyone who has some basic knowledge of biology will surely know what happens when sperm reaches the egg. However, in some cases this is made impossible for some reason or another. Very often, if the woman has had some medical problems in the past, her fallopian tubes may well be blocked which is what is stopping the eggs from reaching the right place to be fertilized.
This scarring on the fallopian tubes can be caused by all sorts of medical problems and it is these that are usually investigated first if it is the woman who is found to be in need of attention. Sometimes the scarring can be cleared and other times the tube can be repaired. If nothing can be done to unblock the tubes, the eggs may be gathered from the woman so that some other treatments can be tried. One, as mentioned, is in vitro fertilization which takes place in the clinic. The donor sperm is collected from the man and checked thoroughly to ensure that they are healthy. If they are, this is mixed together with the eggs and incubated to see if they will fertilize the eggs.
When this occurs, the eggs, which by now are showing signs of growth, or the embryos as they now will be called, are implanted back into the womb and hopefully will progress to a normal pregnancy.
Life is never this simple, of course, and it may take several attempts for the woman to hold onto the embryos. Those that are not used in the first insertion are usually frozen for use at later attempts so that she does not have to go through the egg harvesting route again so soon. Multiple births have been a side effect of this kind of work but of late, doctors have perfected the process so that at most twins may result. Possibly triplets too but after this number have taken hold, most doctors will advise on cutting down on the number so that the embryos left behind have a better chance of survival. This process is by no means simple or without its downfalls. The woman will have to undergo some rather uncomfortable hormone treatments to bump up the number of eggs ready for fertilization, and the man may well have to provide several samples before the process is successful. However, considering the results, it may all be very worthwhile indeed.
