It's time to go back to the 80s
They say that eras have a way of coming back around as style and society go through their regular transitions and new generations are introduced to new genres of music, fashion and cultural phenomena. But is it all as new as it appears? Are the latest pop sensations unique or just a throw-back to a bygone era? Well… judging by the latest developments it appears that the 80s are back with a vengeance. <br/><br/> Movies <br/><br/> Movies are always a staple of how society is evolving, not just in the documentaries and the true stories but the creative influences and inspirations. With the 80s being effectively 30 years ago isn't it likely that many of today's directors would have been the movie goers of that time. In fact they would have grown up in the melee of 80s cheese so the movie scene is rife with 80s influence. Aside from planned sequels to 80s classics such as 'Ghostbusters' and 'Bill & Ted', films like 'Drive' and 'Death Proof' have shown definite 80s influence. <br/><br/> Music <br/><br/> 80s music has all about big hair and bigger shows. Groups like Motley Crue and KISS personified glam rock and bands like the Buzzcocks and the New York Dolls can be seen to influence bands heavily now. Big budget showmanship is back with the over the top stage productions and punk from this era has clearly inspired modern bands like Anti-flag and Cage the Elephant. <br/><br/> It's always the case that eras of music take a serious bashing for a while and it seemed like an eternity for the much maligned 80s. However, with people beginning to remember what good did come out of the 80 the 90s are next in line for a bashing. Anybody like Ace of Base? <br/><br/> Fashion <br/><br/> On a final note fashion is the last major culprit to propagate the trends of the 80s. Think neon colours, big hair and makeup on men and you're in the 1980s. No… wait… you're actually in 2012. Maybe the legwarmers haven't taken off again but there's certainly a penchant for the gloriously over the top style. Look at Lady Gaga and tell me she's not one of Gene Simmons 2000 illegitimate children. Aside from this funny t shirts also seem more and more to reference 80s films brands and music.
