What Skills Do You Need To Be A Hairdresser?
Do you have what it takes to cut hair?
Along with prostitution, hair dressing or barbering is one of the world's oldest professions. For fairly obvious reasons almost everyone needs to get their hair cut on a regular basis. It is not a fad that is going to disappear at some point and there is unlikely to be a pill you can take any time soon that prevents your hair from growing. This means that hairdressing is an attractive career for many, especially as it gives you a chance to be creative, to spend all day talking to people and pays better and better the more elaborate your hair styles get or the more exclusive your salon becomes.

So now we have established that it is a great career choice, aside from obvious hair dressing techniques, what skills do you need to have to do it as a job?

Interpersonal Skills

As you will be spending all day with clients you need to be able to be friendly and enjoy meeting new people all day. You also need to be able to get on with your colleagues in the salon. Some people struggle to hold down a conversation or have a tendency to put their foot in their mouth every two sentences. You don't need to be the world's greatest conversationalist but as long as you make your clients feel happy and relaxed you should be fine.

Patience

Some hair styles take a lot of time and accuracy to get right. You will need to be able to stand working on a head of hair for several hours at a time, meaning that you need to have a lot of patience. You also need to be able to deal with fussy clients who may test your patience with their high level of demands.

Business Management Skills

You may have the opportunity to work self-employed. If you go down this route you need to be able to manage your finances and records, make sure you have enough stock or merchandise to do your job and be able to carry out some kind of marketing and advertising to make sure you get enough clients. If you have rent a chair in an existing salon you will however save money, as you will not having to pay for your own salon design or expensive salon furniture.

Time Management

While you may indeed like to be able to spend all day making one head of hair look completely perfect, if you are only getting paid per hair cut you will not be making as much money as you could. You need to have good time management skills to ensure that you use your time efficiently, not spending too long on each hair style to ensure you make a good profit from your day but without forfeiting your standards.
