Want to Make Your Own Clothing Label?

by Ron Maier

Wouldn’t you love to have your own private clothing label? Do you have ideas and perhaps clothes that you have already made? The process to making your own label company is really not as difficult as some might suppose. First you must realize that not all major clothing names are truly gifted fashion designers. Making your own label often has less to do with fashion and more to do with hard work. Some things to keep in mind when you get started: 1. Creativity. The concepts and graphics you choose can make or break your label. Be sure to have the best talent you can find working on the ideas for every part of your label. 2. Having a good logo is very important. Many clothing labels have made their start today completely due to their logo design. Believe it or not, a catchy logo will sell, regardless of its fashion or prestige. 3. You need your own Screen Printer. Having your own screen printer will save you in overhead costs enormously. That is how many of the up and coming labels today got their start. Do not be afraid to do the grunt work to start out. 4. Find a good blank apparel supplier. Again, this will affect your overhead costs enormously. Look for starting suppliers or local and unique businesses. 5. Make a Line Sheet to show the potential buying market. It is very important to know who your target customer is. In today’s intense clothing market, it is a good idea to go after a specific people group in the beginning, perhaps later you can branch out a little more. Plus, retailers like to see a specific target buyer in mind. 6. Gather the right sales and promotional team. Your clothes cannot go anywhere without someone getting them seen. Let your promotional team get creative with advertisement and get some really hard working sales representatives pounding the stores and distributors. This can also be done yourself, but you really must commit a large amount of time to this part of the business. This last element of making a clothing label is definitely the most vital. Regardless of the creativity or quality of your clothes, they will go nowhere without a good pitch. Make sure you or your team has the intensity to hit every boutique and clothing store and never give up pitching your clothes to retail store buyers over and over. Be sure your presentation is professional and catered to both Nordstrom and the average small town retailer. It must be concise and exciting, you don’t want to waste anyone’s time, but you have to sell your ideas. In the end, you must ask yourself, “can I promote this stuff?” If you cannot, you must find someone or some others that can be outgoing and passionate. You and/or your team must be organized, professional over the phone, and pumped up everyday to get your new label out there. If you think you can accomplish these things, you are ready to make the first steps and get people out there wearing those clothing ideas you have been dreaming up.
