Be Happy, Be Different.

Tips for being unique and standing out.

by Shaun Connell

The Internet is filled with millions of blogs. Millions. I can't quite rap my mind around the number of blogs out there. That means one thing to people trying to make money: "Crap."

To stand out you have to ... stand out. To get noticed, sometimes you have to be what's called an "attention whore". Do what it takes to get noticed and get links, and the Search Engine Gods will take notice in you. We'll talk about three points of getting noticed here:

1. Do what it takes

Write differently. Write with a flair. Write dramatically. Write mysteriously. Write differently. If you aren't different from your competition, you can't beat them -- you have nothing to beat them with.

I recently looked over the hundreds of blogs I've subscribed to in the past, only to unsubscribe later. I couldn't figure out why I unsubscribed to so many -- until it hit me. I unsubscribed to the "boring" blogs. They might have had content that was worth reading, but they didn't resonate with me. They didn't do what it took to keep my attention, or to stick out in my mind. They lost my traffic. Don't make the same mistake. Stand out.

2. Get a personality

Blogging is like dating. Subscribing is going steady. Guest posting is... okay, I took the analogy too far -- but you get the point. What's the first impression of your website when someone is reading your posts and pages? Funny? Fun to be around? Do they feel like they are learning something?

If not, then get that way before you lose any more traffic. Succesful blogging is based on having an identity. The top two bloggers that anyone thinks of are John Chow and Darren Rowse. John Chow has an evil identity -- it's different. Darren Rowse has a humble yet powerful personality -- it's different.

And it works.

3. Don't be an idiot

Don't go crazy trying to be different. Remember the old "Rich Jerk" program that was all the rage back in the day? That's over-kill. Don't alienate your audience by reminding them of a stomach ulcer. Be different -- don't be a cancer.

The profound impact of these three extremely basic marketing techniques can't be overstated. They're true -- so go out and do them. Be different. Stand out. Get traffic.
