Balasore – City of Sand
Balasore is a coastal city situated in the state of Orissa, in the south-eastern region of India. It is the administrative headquarters of the Balasore District and is best-known for the Chandipur Beach. It is located around 194 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar. The city covers an area of 3076 km square km. It is surrounded by West Bengal in the north and the Bay of Bengal in the east.
The city is known as the ‘city of sand’ for comprising a large coastal area and an inner alluvial belt. Forests and mines also cover its large area. The Budhabalanga River and the Mahagiri Mountain in Balasore are its main attractions. The city is also the centre of the Indian Ballistic Missile Defence Program’s test range. The district of Balasore contains crisscrossed patterns of perennial and estuarine rivers due to close proximity with the sea. Two important rivers here include the Budhabalanga and Subarnarekha that flow from west to east to finally meet in the Bay of Bengal.
The place is known for its cuisine and one must try the food while travelling to the town. You can visit the tomb of a Sufi saint that is located in the town and many pilgrims can be seen here. Some of the temples that are located in the region are Gopinatha Temple, Biranchinarayan Temple and Lagula Narasimha Dev. There are many myths that surround the Khirachora Gopinatha Temple. Other places of interest include Asta Duraga and Budhar Chandi. The Chandipur Beach is known for its resorts and the shallow seas attract many visitors. It is located at a distance of 30 kilometers from the town of Balasore. Panchalingeshwar and Chillka Lake are other places of tourist interest.

The town of Balasore has excellent rail connectivity and one reach the place from several cities such as Chennai, Howrah, Bangalore, New Delhi. Buses are available from some nearby cities and towns and these are also a good option.
