History of the buffet
Buffets are a wonderfully versatile event which lend themselves to almost any type of occasion. The word buffet actually comes from the French word for 'sideboard' which was originally used to describe the furniture the food was on but then later came to refer to the food itself. The popularity of the buffet spread through Europe but it wasn't until the second half of the 20th century that it became truly popular in the English-speaking world following the popularisation of the word smorgasbord by the Swedes at a New York exhibition in 1939.
Nowadays buffets are hugely popular at restaurants who may offer the well-known "all you can eat" format or a set-price buffet dining option. At private celebrations too, buffets are an excellent choice for many occasions. This is largely because a greater number of people can be served with ease, diners are able to choose what they eat and how much and a greater variety of food can be on the menu allowing many different tastes to be satisfied.
Types of buffet
Buffets can be tailored to varying degrees of formality and are suited to many types of venues. By offering a good selection of buffet food, you can cater for all your guests' tastes and it is virtually guaranteed that everyone will find something they like on the buffet table.
Traditionally, buffets have included hot dishes and cold dishes. Cold buffets with no hot dishes (similar to a smorgasbord) may also be offered. Generally these types of buffet food require plates and utensils.
Finger buffets consist of food that has been designed to be small and easily consumed by hand (for example small cakes, small slices of pizza and food on cocktail sticks).
The layout and decoration of the buffet table and buffet food has much scope for creativity and it is often a nice touch to have some kind of focal centrepiece.
Planning a buffet You may not have considered using a catering company for your buffet but it can be a cost and time saving option. Preparation of buffet food can be fiddly and time-consuming and a specialised catering company is likely to be able to offer a wider range of food for your budget as well as taking the hard work out of the preparation. A company offers a wide range of hot and cold buffet foods (including delicious desserts and hot drinks) which can be tailored to your requirements. They are also able to provide all equipment and uniformed staff to attend the event to ensure everything runs to plan and then tidy away at the end too. When planning a buffet, especially for large numbers of people, this kind of service can prove invaluable.
