Lawn And Garden: Decorating Like A Pro
For sure you've driven past a professional landscape job before and noticed how much better it looked than so many of the homeowner jobs you have seen in the past. They just seem to have... well a "professionally done" look. So then just what is it in particular that they're doing that the folks down the street didn't do when they landscaped their yard?
Testing and conditioning your planting soil should be primary on your list. Check its ph level to make sure that it's down around ph 7 or so. Then you have to keep in mind that in the building of your house and the digging for its foundation, all of the good topsoil was probably scraped away. Use some mulch or peat moss to fluff it back up so it will hold water, and air better.
Large rocks or "boulders" are a great yard and home decorating trick and you're far better off with one large boulder rather than several smaller rocks. Now be aware that really big boulders can be costly due to their "difficulty in handling". Also make darn sure that you think well where it's going because once it's dropped off the truck, if it's a big one, you're stuck with it right where it is.
Small Koi ponds and other similar water features are just so easy to go with because they look fantastic, and add a "living natural element" to your design scheme. The problem with fish ponds though, is that they are very messy and smelly to maintain and as a result, so after go bad. One solution though, is prefabricated waterfalls that don't have fish and that you can use chlorine in to keep the water fresh.
If you live in a sunny hot climate then you may be far better served by "looking up" before you look down. That is that you might be better served by investing your resources in creating some shade in your yard with things like porch awnings and large shade trees before you start in on ground cover. Larger trees are for sure more costly but you don't have to wait for them to grow.
Then lastly putting off installing an irrigation system is just too easy to do. You're anxious to get started planting and besides, your plants are all so small and easy to water. The fact is that they will grow and it often gets to the point where hand watering is just too time consuming. A good quality irrigation system makes maintaining your yard so much easier, and adds value to your property.
