Is Your Conservatory As Safe As It Could Be?
Dazzlingly beautiful death trap…
A conservatory is one of the best additions any home owner can make to their house. They offer you a whole new living space to allow you to spread out your life out into, they provide a massive amount of light for your home and they add value to your property. They are also considered highly desirable and may be coveted by neighbours and passers-by which might make a conservatory owner happy.

The only problem with conservatories is that they may not be safe as their salespeople would like you to believe. Here are some of the key areas where conservatories let you and your property down:

Security

One of the biggest problems for conservatories is that when they are added to a house, they significantly reduce the integrity of the properties security. For starters, the fact that they are basically a big giant window means that anyone wanting to see inside and look at what stuff you have, they have a very easy job. Most burglars will 'case' a property before they attempt to break in so that they have a good idea of what is inside and if it is worth their risk and effort. You can however remedy this by getting your conservatory fitted with blinds.

Another aspect of security can arise if your conservatory is quite old. Older conservatories are often single glazed and do not have the locks and double glazing that modern conservatories have. This means that to gain access a burglar would only need to break the window or wrench the window open. If you are not keen to upgrade your conservatory, especially if you can't afford it or it is practically an antique, you can always install an alarm system.

Conservatory alarm systems can be fitted to all the doors and UPVC windows so that when the alarm is set, it goes off if anything is opened or broken. This coupled with blinds should make most conservatories a lot safer but does depend on what level of double glazing prices you are willing to pay.

Structure

Another way in which a conservatory can be a bit dangerous is if it is old and/or if it is built incorrectly. Older conservatories may have been built using a row of bricks for foundations as opposed to modern concrete ones. Likewise, cowboy builders have been known to do the same thing to save time and money. Plus as these are buried under the structure they can be easily missed until you start seeing cracks in your walls or frame as the ground underneath slips and makes your conservatory unsafe. If you have any concerns it is a good idea to get a structural engineer or surveyor to give your conservatory a once over.
