The Benefits Of Vehicle Tracking

by Jamie Simpson

Vehicle tracking is so much more than just making sure the cab drivers are earning fares rather than driving their girlfriends around shopping. It's about responsibility to the drivers of the fleet, first and foremost. Without them, the business owner might not have a business. It's about respect toward the business' clients and employees. It's about quality business conduct and ethics. A businessman who protects his drivers is on top of things, backs up his employees and runs a top-notch enterprise. Protecting his fleet is just plain common sense which also makes good business sense.

Take insurance, for example. Insurance companies don't like to pay out on claims anyway, much less when they suspect the driver was on personal business instead of business business. How are the insurance companies going to react when there is no method for ascertaining the driver was or was not on duty at the time of the infraction requiring an insurance company? Saving money is only half of the question, though, the other half being responsibility to the driver. Covering his driver means not having the owner's insurance rates jacked up for having no vehicle tracking system which cuts down the driver's costs, since the difference isn't coming out of his paycheck.

The business' clients have a right to know that their delivery will be on time, so a vehicle tracking system insures the driver doesn't have mechanical problems, traffic messes or other time delays to keep the client from getting his delivery. Efficiency and excellent customer service means increased business, better income for employees and better security all around.

The vehicles themselves need to be considered when thinking of tracking systems. Keeping accurate records of travel time, service costs and fuel consumption makes vehicle tracking systems a must for companies with fleets of either local or short distance vehicles. Fleets are expensive so properly maintaining them after gleaning information from tracking systems protects an investment.

Goodness knows there is so much scamming going on in every type business thinkable, that vehicle tracking makes a business owner secure that his drivers aren't being scammed by persons claiming they didn't receive their delivery. Scamming costs legitimate business so much money each year that business owners are forced to do what they can to keep themselves and their employees immune from them. When scammers don't succeed, costs to the employees, client and business owner remain manageable.

Safety is a huge issue with vehicle tracking systems in a business' fleet. If an employee's vehicle had mechanical malfunctions, if the employee became ill while driving or if the employee was hit by another vehicle while driving, the tracking system would know instantly. The proper relief for the driver would be dispatched, an alternate driver sent to deliver to the client and the vehicle appropriately cared for. This also keeps costs down while protecting and respecting the driver as well as making sure the client receives his delivery. In the end, it's about the people, not the vehicle tracking device.
