Seeing The Southernmost City This Summer - Key West, Florida
People who are smart when it comes to planning a family vacation to Florida know that they have to put up with extra heat and humidity if they want to save a few dollars and beat the crowds by traveling in the summertime. People who are extra smart when it comes to planning a unique and fun filled family vacation know that they can save all of that money and miss most of the uncomfortable weather by heading as far south as they can in Florida. Key West is the perfect destination vacation for families looking for a great trip this summer.
It seems illogical to think that the southernmost city in the country would actually be cooler than other parts of the state, but it is true. Surrounded by water on all sides and being over 100 miles out from the mainland, Key West is continually bathed in trade winds that keep a cool breeze blowing. That breeze helps to keep the humidity away, and the resulting temperatures are typically ten to fifteen degrees lower than what Miami, Tampa and Orlando will be.
Of course, having more pleasant weather would not mean a thing if there were nothing to do on the vacation. Thankfully, that is not the case. Key West has been a tourist destination for almost 90 years now, and as the island has grown, it has developed into having something for everyone. There are several museums that celebrate the rich history of the area, with specific focus on piracy and treasure hunting. There are civil war era forts to explore, historical walking tours that focus on the nature and architecture, and over 300 Key West restaurants where people can experience New Island Cuisine, the cooking style that was invented on the island.
Being on an island means that there are also several different entertainment options on the water. Charter fishing trips are available for everything from backwater flats to deep sea excursions. There are snorkel and scuba trips available as well as guided kayak and Jet Ski tours. Most famous for the spectacular sunsets, many different sailing charters offer options to experience this beauty from out on the water.
Some people prefer to have nothing to do on their vacation, and there are several options for that as well. With public beaches on all four sides of the island, tourists can choose from endless white sand where they can work on their tan, rugged coastlines full of shells and coral and the opportunity to duck under an umbrella while getting lost in a beach read.
This summer, the best way to have a great vacation while beating the heat is to head as far south as possible. Get down to Key West and see what life is like when you are living it on "island time."
