The Two Great Pillars: Prevention And Treatment From Drug Abuse

by Ericka Lopez

Prevention and recovery from drug abuse are two opposites but with 1 purpose. One is determined in staying out of the problem while the other is committed in solving the problem. The most ideal motto for all is "prevention is better than cure" yet, the world we lived in seems to have developed more cures rather than prevention measures. The truth is, humans are born with an innate desire for discovery of new experiences. Regardless of the outcome, men in general are more likely to try something new once there's a thing presented to them.

Medicines are primarily used to treat diseases and disorders. Recreational drugs on the other hand, aren't meant for cure but rather for maximum energy and euphoric purpose. The abuse of drugs can have many reasons. The reasons are as many as there are drug addiction patients. There are similarities, however, that are useful for addiction treatment. Clinicians will be able to simplify and categorized treatment based on studies of these similarities. Pain relievers are examples of commonly abused drugs and many have fallen victims of it. If one would adhere on the idea of prevention, one may say that pain reliever shouldn't be used. This is an absolutely false idea since pain relievers serve as a solution to an underlying physical problem. Prevention in this case could mean proper administration of the medications and regular monitoring from the recommending physician. In this way, people will be aware and conscious of their drug use. Physicians always advise their patients for possible drug tolerance and addiction to occur and they usually give prescription drugs only for a specified time frame. Individuals or patients who follow doctors' orders are sure to be free from developing addiction. Those who don't take heed of doctors' orders, are more likely to develop tolerance and dependence on these medications.

Addiction recovery is always the last resort. As much as possible, prevention is way more effective and easier. Those who have developed addiction over prolonged use of drugs need to undergo treatment in order to be free from the negative effects brought about by uncontrolled use of the drugs. Recovery may take a while for some and consistent effort of abstinence is still essential in order to be drug-free. The problem of addiction involves the weakening of the willpower. There are many drug addict patients who are not able to get out of the whirlpool of addiction because of lose persistence. Strong determination together with great social support can truly help in the recovery process.
