Five Recommended San Jose Restaurants
San José, the most cosmopolitan city in Central America, has a wealth of restaurants and local sodas, or cafes, serving food from across the world. Normally the first or last stop for all those arriving or leaving Costa Rica by air, time in San José provides the perfect opportunity to savour the food on offer.
Costa Rica's staple foods are rice and beans, and form a large part of the majority of the cuisine. However, Ticos, or Costa Ricans, make the most of the local fruit and vegetables on offer too, meaning their dishes are relatively nutritious. For those seeking a good, local dish, head to Bar Morazán, located on the second floor of Hotel Costa Rica. This restaurant has been acknowledged as the best place to get a cheap yet filling and tasty almuerzo, or set lunch, in San José. For those on a bigger budget, the restaurant Nuestra Tierra, diagonally opposite the National Museum, is a good option, serving local food with waiters in traditional costume and live music.
Away from local food, and widely acknowledge as a contender for the best restaurant in San José is La Esquina de Buenos Aires. The restaurant is nearly always full, with locals and tourists alike - the sure sign of a great restaurant. On the menu are numerous specialty meats including beef tenderloin, rib-eye and Argentinean sausage. The restaurant is centrally located on Calle 11 at the corner of Avenida 4.
Those in search of Chinese food should head to Tin Jo in the centre of San José. This up market restaurant prepares beautifully decorated dishes in a classy environment. There are numerous Chinese restaurants in the nearby area but so far none to rival Tin Jo.
Café Mundo is the choice for those in search of world cuisine. Nearly always busy, this restaurant is popular with university students, theatre goers and arts lovers alike. The restaurant serves top class food from across the world including Italian, Japanese and traditional Tican, or Costa Rican, dishes amongst others. The décor is inspiring too, with wood tables and art deco chairs set out in a colonial mansion. Café Mundo is located on the corner of Calle 15 and Avenida 9.
These restaurants by no means cover the extent of variety of food on offer in San José. There are Vietnamese, Korean, American, Mexican, Greek and Peruvian restaurants too, to name but a few.
