Want To Learn The Real Secret Of Coaching.

by David Tang

Success in direct sales depends on many things and among the most important is coaching. How do you become a good coach? The secret of coaching 101 was revealed on Super Bowl Sunday. But not on the field. What was the big story taking place on that day? While everyone was talking about how Christine Aguilera completely blew the National Anthem there was another story taking place that has some deep lessons to teach us. The lesson has to do with how successful you will be in your entrepreneurial venture.

This secret is paramount in any business, but it is critical in the direct sales industry. The lesson has to do with coaching. How seriously do you take your coaching responsibilities? How well equipped are you to fulfill your coaching responsibilities?

You know you don't have to know it all to be good. You don't even have to be experienced to be successful. What you do need is persistence and the undying willingness to go the extra mile to help others succeed. The real Super Bowl Sunday lesson is this. You Have To Give a Part of Yourself. While everyone was grimacing at Aguilera's mistake a human drama was taking place at Emory University. That drama gives us insight and clues as to how to be an excellent coach.

Kevin Jordan was a baseball recruit and won a scholarship at Wake Forrest University. He was from Georgia and was recruited by Tom Walters the baseball coach at Wake Forest. Last year Jordan became ill with a kidney disease. It left him dependent on dialysis and it would only get worse. There was a 4 to 5 year waiting list for a kidney transplant. None of his family proved to be eligible donors. His chances for survival were dim indeed . That's when Coach Walters stepped up to the plate. He volunteered to give one of his kidneys. He went thru the weeks of testing, the tissue typing, the scans, the whole nine yards. At any point along the process he could have said he didn't want to go thru with it. But on Super Bowl Sunday Coach Walters underwent surgery at Emory University.

Even when he was coach at the University of New Orleans and his house was under 12 feet of water because of hurricane Katrina and he had to move the team to New Mexico for practice and games, he volunteered to help any player who wanted to transfer. He didn't have to do that either. He went that extra mile.

Now I've had coaches in high school and college. Maybe you have too. But can you imagine your coach saying I'll teach you to hit, field, tackle, throw and by the way if you need a kidney you can have one of mine?

It's Not The How To, It's The Want Too

I don't know from a technical stand point how good Coach Walters is. I don't have to. I know enough to know I'd play for that man anytime anywhere. How dedicated are you to the success of your team, your associates? It's not the How To; it's the Want To. Coaching is more than training. Coaching encompasses training but goes well beyond. Coaching says I'll teach you how to present, do three way calls, set up your meeting, what to know about the product or service, but beyond that I'm going to give you a part of me. I'm going to give you my support, encouragement, my experience and I'll help to hold you accountable. I'm going to help you thru the failures and celebrate with your successes. Thank you Coach Walters and Kevin Jordan for giving us a picture of what it really means to coach, and serve and help our teammates get thru those tough spots in life and move on to the Super Bowl of their dreams.
