Fabric's Many Uses
There are many traditional, new and creative ways to use fabric, here are six of them.
1. Outdoor signage:
Last month signage went high tech. It's been reported that as businesses are seeking new ways to make their brands stand out there has been increasing demand for signs to incorporate specialty fabrics such as LED display and solar power. Print media is now combining their creative work with electronics to help brands "shine".
2. Outside of a home:
Markus Heinsdorff designed what's called the German-Chinese House (GCH) for Shanghai's Expo in 2010. The structure was built entirely out of bamboo, which in addition to being provocative aesthetically, also made it environmentally friendly and functional. Two features that audience and organizers love.
3. Inside of an architecture office:
The inside of an architecture office ought to be much more aesthetically pleasing than just any old office. Mulvanny G2 Architecture in Irvine California took their interior decorating to the next level by installing a fabric piece in their café area. The piece resembles moving clouds with colour changing lights projected onto it.
4. For fashion:
Without fabric we wouldn't have clothes. The fashion industry has come to be one of the most important in our society. Not only are clothing a necessity but they are a symbol of prestige and personal style. Every morning that we get dressed we are making a statement about who we are and how we feel. Some people of course, take fashion more seriously than others, and usually tend to look much better for it.
5. For sets:
One of the most impressive parts of going to the theatre is seeing the sets on stage. Over time I have noticed that stage sets are becoming much more elaborate and I would guess that a considerable part of the performance's budget goes to creating them. With advances in technology and the immersion of multimedia experts, stage sets are incorporating video and advanced light and projection technologies into their designs more than ever before. This makes for very multimedia theatre.
6. For decoration:
An unupholstered couch is not very attractive, nor is a bed with no sheets on it, or curtainless windows. Textiles are one of the most beautiful ways to decorate and add character to your home. From fabrics, to wallpaper, to placemats, carpets, and drapes designers and homeowners alike can have a field day at the fabric store.
Fabrics are built into almost everything that we own. And their various properties make them suitable for almost any physical thing. Moreover, fabric can replace so many other materials when it comes to interior and exterior design.
