Getting A Windmill: The Most Critical Point To Keep In Mind

by Roger Brown

When you purchase a wind turbine for your house it needs to be treated like any other home project. You need to get all of your ducks in a row before you begin actually trying to price anything and certainly before you try to build anything on your own and install it.

There are many aspects of a successful home project. To purchase a wind turbine is no different. You need to take a tactical approach and try to understand what resources that you have to work with and then try to match the marketing options that you have to meet those resources at your house.

The most important thing is to calculate what the wind signature looks like on your property. That is not an easy thing to do but it can be done if you take a little data and reassess. The way to collect the data is by using a small vertical wind turbine simulator. These are called anemometers and they will rest on top of a tower that you install for 6 to 8 months while you collect that data.

Then, you will take the data that you collected and downloaded it to your computer. That data on the computer will then be analyzed for average wind speed and the peaks and troughs that are part of the wind signature your property has.

This will tell you how much fuel you have available to operate your wind turbine. Once you know that you can determine how much power you can realistically make and when you purchase a wind turbine you can optimize it for the amount of wind you have to harvest.

This is by far the most important thing you have to do and it will take the longest to get the data. You can't just operate off of averages when you talking about something as expensive as much a part of your annual budget is it will be to purchase a wind turbine for your house.

In summary, it's not enough just understand that you need renewable energy at home. If you're going to purchase a wind turbine and invest the time and energy it takes to get this right, you need to spend your time upfront going for your homework and understanding what the wind profile on your property actually looks like. This is a bit of a drudgery, but is something that will pay off with large dividends in the future.
