Things to Do With Your Parents
Parents coming to London for a visit? Not sure what to do with them? We all have busy lives - between work and friends and other commitments. But when our parents come to town they expect our undivided attention - as if we also wouldn't enjoy an extra few days off - unfortunately that rarely happens. Instead, we run back and forth between the office and meeting them for dinners and theatre in a different place each night, and have to provide them with a detailed and mapped out itinerary of how they can entertain themselves during the day. Here are a few ideas to help you out.
Things they can do without you:
Galleries:
London is full of galleries. The newest and best exhibitions always pass through this city. If your parents are into a particular artist or movement look to see whether there is an exhibition on that they might enjoy. Suggest that they go in the morning or afternoon, before or after a delicious lunch they can enjoy near the gallery. If it happens to be in an area that has great shopping, markets, or parks, suggest that they spend the other half of the day having a little walk around. And maybe slip in the fact that you've been looking for a new coat for autumn!
Hot air balloon ride in the countryside:
Taking a hot air balloon ride is a relaxing yet adventurous activity suitable for people of all ages. Most UK hot air balloon companies have take off points in all the Home Counties. Maybe recommend that your parents rent a car and take a drive to Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire or wherever, stopping for a nice lunch on the way there and spend the afternoon taking flight over the beautiful English countryside.
Cafes and restaurants:
If your parents are the types who'd rather walk to and from a nice lunch and spend the afternoon reading in a pretty garden, then send them to the cutest eateries in your area. If you are westbound, you might suggest that they head to Aubaine or Tom's Kitchen in Chelsea for a delicious brunch. If Fulham is closer to where you live, then perhaps send them to Megan's on the New Kings Road. There they can dine in the garden (weather permitting) and stay as long as they like. Notting Hill also has some great coffee shops including the Idler Academy, a bookshop, coffeehouse and school in one.
London is full of things for mum and dad to do. If their creative juices aren't already flowing than get them going for them. Suggest some ideas, draw them maps, provide them with an Oyster card and a timeframe that suits everyone's schedule.
