Why You Should Visit Edinburgh

Endless fun in Scotland's Capital

by Sam Qam

Edinburgh, Scotland's capital, is one of Europe's most awe inspiring cities. Set on undulating terrain on the East Coast of the country and home to range of grand architectural styles it is a must see for any intrepid tourist.

When in this vibrant city you are never short of something to do or see, whether you are a fan of just experiencing the vibe of a place or keen on seeing some notable sights and visiting tourist attractions. However, there are specific, must see, events that take place in the city that you should definitely not miss out on.

Hogmanay:

Hogmanay, the Scottish celebration of the new year, is a huge celebration in Edinburgh. In years gone by it was as big, if not a bigger celebration than Christmas, this is still reflected by the fact that the Scots get an extra days holiday for new year compared to their English neighbours.

The celebrations begin on the 30th of January with a torchlight procession that leaves the Scottish parliament and culminates with a huge fireworks display on Calton Hill which overlooks the city.

On the 31st the celebrations really get going. The city centre is taken over by thousands of revellers basking in the bonhomie atmosphere of a monstrous street party which features countless bands and a huge celidh to delight the crowds. There are of course fireworks at midnight, which light up the majestic castle, and these of course, spark a mass sing a long of the traditional auld lang syne.

For the fool hardy the celebrations the merriments continue the following morning with the Loony Dook – an annual splash in the River Forth in the shadow of the world famous Forth Rail Bridge. Perhaps this is a necessity to clear the head after the previous night's celebrations?

Edinburgh Fringe Festival:

For the month of August the Fringe Festival runs concurrently with other arts festivals as Edinburgh is transformed into a pulsating hive of performances at every turn.

Regardless of what your taste is for viewing performance arts, there will be more of it here than you can possibly imagine. From musicals to mime and comedy to ballet, you will never be short of something to see. Many of the performers hire out an Edinburgh apartment for the month and put a show on almost every day.

There are some acts that you don't even have to pay to see as there are a multitude of street shows that transform the Royal Mile in to their performance space. Regardless of whether you like to read all the reviews meticulously before selecting what to purchase tickets to go and see or prefer to be convinced by one of the many promoters that their show is indeed the best on the Fringe, you can't help but see something that will make you smile for years to come.
